This medal honors Jean Joseph Herman Richir (1866-1942), native of the commune of Ixelles, for second prize in the 1886 painting competition behind Constant Montald.
Painter and poster artist of the academic painting movement, J.J. H. Richir produced a considerable body of work and was recognized among the European high society of the time.
His paintings can be found today in several major museums including, among others, those of Brussels, Barcelona, Budapest, Sydney, Seattle etc..
