Sam Browne leather belt probably from the Canadian army in the 50s.
The Sam Browne Belt is worn by officers and warrant officers first class on ceremonial occasions.
The invention of this belt is attributed to General Sir Samuel James Browne who was an officer in the 19th century British Indian Army who lost his left arm to a sword cut during the Indian Rebellion and the lack of a left hand to steady his scabbard made it difficult for him to draw his sword.
He designed an additional belt that hooked onto the waist belt and passed over the shoulder to stabilize the scabbard. This belt eventually became part of a standard uniform.
The belt can be worn without the shoulder belt.
