SÉGUR COMTESSE: (1799-1874) Sophie Rostopchin, daughter of a Russian aristocrat, marries the Count of Segur and publishes her first book at over 50 years of age. In 1860 Louis Hachette established the collection of the pink library where she published. In 1866, she became a Franciscan tertiary but continued to write.

The theme of the Countess of Ségur's childhood marks a break with previous models of children's literature (Perrault's Tales). The punishments and the realism of the descriptions becomes uncompromising. According to her, we should write only what we have seen.
