Ferrotype depicting a little girl sitting in a Victorian plaid dress.

Beautiful photo of a little girl dressed in a beautiful little dress typical of the time.

Clarity of facial features despite the length of the pose for the time.

She looks like a little girl out of the Countess of Segur's tales.

Notice the strange position of the right hand. Does she have a handicapped arm?

The plate has a white mark at the bottom and slight folds (see photos).

Good state of use

3 inches 1/2 x 2 inches 1/2 or 9cm x 6cm

The Ferrotype process was developed by the French Adolphe Alexandre Martin (1824-1896) who was looking for a process to improve the work of plate engraving for printers

Like the ambrotype, the ferrotype uses a photosensitive base to the collodion. It is spread on an iron plate 0.15 mm thick that has previously been covered with black varnish.
Simple, fast, inexpensive, the Ferrotype was a huge commercial success and would last until the eve of the Second World War in Europe.
Like other types of black and white images, Ferrotypes can be enhanced with brush-applied colors by artisan photographers.
