Claude Montana is a French fashion designer who began his career in the 60s but his style really took off in the 80s, the years of the “Palace” generation (the new Palace inaugurated in 1978 by Grace Jones and its revival of “la vie en rose” will become a kind of anthem of the Palace, the waiters are dressed by Mugler and becomes a high place of Parisian partying and symbol of all extravagances, “from the hybridization of punk and disco, from street kids to the most flamboyant stars, from the underground and freedom” Many designers such as Kenzo, Karl Lagerfield and Claude Montana organize fashion challenges there, this place saw the birth of this generation”
Claude Montana was during this period a central figure in ready-to-wear fashion with architectural and imposing shapes, oversized shoulders, slim waists, his silhouettes displayed a strong, modern and dominant woman. His style seduced wealthy and socially rich women, with a thirst for complex construction and a quality close to that of couture (he was often nicknamed the "king of shoulder pads").
Lanvin asked him in 1989 to revive its collections. The success was dazzling and he won two Dés d'Or in quick succession in 1991 and 92.
Claude Montana is bouncing back as a crucial reference point for connoisseurs with his influence and his fantastical, futuristic silhouettes. He made them for women who exuded an aura of strength and power.
Four Parisian designers defined one of the most fashionable decades in history: Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaia, Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana.
